Club History 1 of 3

1. Boys' Football

Our club was originally founded as Wigton Moor Junior AFC in 1978 from a single team. From these humble beginnings it then formed a Sports Association and shared facilities with a local cricket team in the 1980s, moving from its original base at Wigton Moor Primary School (hence the team name) to pitches at The Recreation Ground off Harrogate Road – where it is still based today. The cricket team folded some years later and their legacy is that the club is administered as the Wigton Sports Association but plays under the name of Wigton Moor Junior AFC.

Since 1995, Target Soccer has been based at the club both as a mentoring hub for coaches and as a football development unit for players. It allows boys and Girls to play and develop their skills from the ages of 5 to 11 on a Saturday morning under the watchful eye of Kevin Barr - the Association’s Director of Coaching.

Today the club has 14 boy’s teams playing in age groups from Under 8 to Under 18 as well as a successful Open Age Men’s team. Historically Wigton has always played in the Harrogate and District League and Harrogate and Wharfedale Friendly League, but has some teams playing in The Garforth and Leeds Minor Leagues. Wigton has many Cup and League Championship wins over the last 25 years and we would like to think that we are seen as a friendly club who play football fairly and in the right spirit.
